Spiritual uses: It is believed that red thyme can ward away nightmares, improve memory and generate a cheerful mood. Red thyme is often used in charms and rituals to restore or bestow courage on the practitioner, as well as in grounding spells that help a person deal with practical matters.

History: The Egyptians used red thyme to embalm mummies. In ancient Greece, red thyme was burned as a purifying incense, and in fact the word thyme comes from the Greek ‘thymon’, meaning ‘to perfume or fumigate’. During the Middle Ages, red thyme was given to knights before a joust or battle to bolster their courage, and placed in courtrooms to ward off disease. Red thyme oil was even used as an antiseptic in WWI, and its main constituent, thymol, is still one of the strongest antiseptics known.
